If you’ve been wondering whether a rhinestone collar is safe for dock diving, you’re not alone.
The short answer is yes. But let me give you the longer one, because it actually matters.
Loki is still new to dock diving, but he goes in wearing rhinestone bling collars. I’m testing them deliberately. I rotate through different collars to see how the crystals and cabochons hold up over time in pool water. I also have clients who regularly wear my collars for dock diving and other dog sports. Here’s everything you need to know about rhinestone (aka crystal aka bling) dog collars for dock diving.
What the rules actually say about rhinestone collars at dock diving competitions
The major dock diving organizations — NADD, DockDogs, and UKC — all have similar collar guidelines. Only flat buckle-type or martingale collars are permitted at competitions. E-collars, pinch collars, and prong collars must be removed before the dog jumps. Your dog may also jump “naked” if you prefer — no collar is required on the dock at all.
A rhinestone Biothane® collar with a flat buckle? Completely legal under every major ruleset. The rules are about collar type and safety, not sparkle. One thing worth noting: at UKC events, collar tags and other items hanging from the collar are prohibited on the dock. Remove dangling ID tags before your dog’s run, but the collar itself is fine.
Why Biothane® is the right base material for water sports
If you’re in the dock diving community, you probably already know Biothane®. It’s waterproof, stink-proof, and heavy duty — great dock diving. When your dog is out of the pool, it dries immediately, with no yeasty buildup from wearing a wet collar too long.
Biothane® doesn’t absorb water, doesn’t hold odors, and doesn’t break down from repeated pool sessions. After a Big Air run, you rinse it off, dry the hardware, and it looks exactly the same as when you arrived.
The hardware on CCC rhinestone collars is nickel-coated steel and black powder-coated steel — both of which handle chlorine pool water well with a rinse after swimming. As with any collar hardware, a quick rinse after each pool session keeps things looking sharp and extends the life of the hardware. How I make sure the rhinestones actually stay put
This is the question I get most, and it’s a fair one. You’re looking at a collar covered in bling and wondering whether those crystals are going to hold up after your dog launches off the dock.
The crystals on every CCC collar are flatback stones individually hand-set into rimsets and sealed with a resin backing. I’m pretty sure I made up that technique, I’ve never heard of anyone else doing it – but for me, it’s a no-brainer. It takes extra time, but the rhinestones don’t jiggle around in the rimsets and it just gives some added protection to the back of the rhinestone.
But the waterproofing doesn’t stop there. I paint and seal every cut end of the Biothane® to minimize any moisture wicking into the material. I also paint the buckle holes — every single one — for the same reason. It’s the kind of thing that makes a difference over time on a collar that’s going in the water regularly. (Not only that, I just do not like the way an unpainted unsealed collar looks. To me, it looks unfinished. My brain cannot handle that. No shade to the makers that don’t paint/seal their ends – a lot of customers don’t mind. But it’s a step that takes extra time, and therefore you will pay a little bit more for the collar.
Standard rhinestone collars not built for water exposure can experience foil backing lift or oxidation from repeated moisture. The resin seal on CCC collars are specifically designed to address this. Loki has been in the pool in multiple rhinestone collars across different stone types and colorways. Every crystal is still in place.

That said — rhinestone collars aren’t indestructible, and dock diving is a high-impact sport. Treat yours the way you’d treat any gear you care about: rinse after pool sessions, dry the hardware, inspect it regularly, and don’t use it for tie-outs or roughhousing.
A note on color-shifting crystals and water
Color-shifting and iridescent crystals get their rainbow effect from a thin metallic coating applied to the surface of the stone. That coating holds up well in chlorine pool water and saltwater pools — rinse after swimming and you’re good.
Natural ocean saltwater is a different environment, and prolonged exposure can affect color-shifting stones over time.
